  • Has smartphone technology stagnated?

In the department of technology, we have come a long way, what once was a bulky hard to carry around, not having a reliable connection and costly to afford has now become slim, portable, fast and affordable. What we had then did not have a screen in which we could enjoy seeing through other peoples’ eyes but now we do, and so much more like playing video games, earning money, all of these are possible because of a smartphone.

Smartphones evolved a lot during the time of 2014 to 2019, where a lot of thing like full screen, faster processor, camera that puts even DSLRs to shame, were implemented and they were even made affordable thanks to a healthy competition between smartphone companies like Xiaomi, Samsung, One plus, Vivo, Oppo and Apple. But somehow after 2019 the technological development has stagnated; we have not gone anywhere from full screen with a punch hole albeit there were some full screen phones with mechanically protruding cameras but they were not that efficient in the long run. Even in case of processors we have stagnated at a point where the top end processor that was actually helpful was snapdragon 855+ because that enabled us to play PUBG at the highest graphics and high refresh rate but after that what really could those extra power ups in processors like sd865, sd870, sd8gen1 do that 855+ could not. Then MediaTek came into play just like AMD tried to overtake Intel in pc chips, MediaTek took over the market for processors giving a strong competition to snapdragon with its dimensity line ups. But the main issue is not exactly getting solved. Even if there are no new things that are being added to phones except for their physical appearance, even if people argue that they are now giving us 5g, google gave material U themes but they are all trivial where we do not exactly get anything meaningful like maybe faster gameplay, high connectivity in jungle, a battery that lasts for 10 days with heavy usage but with a slimmer body, I know they are illogical but one thing you can agree with me that new phone are not exciting anymore, they are just phones. Well, you could argue that there are now foldable phones, xiaomi’s full body screen phones, phones with in built fans like Redmagic but how many of those features are actually practical. A phone with a full screen, if it were to fall off your hand, your heart would get stuck in your throat plus there are chances of ghost touches or touches that you did not mean to press. In case of a foldable smartphone how many folds do you think a material as fragile as glass can handle plus that makes the phone thick. Even metal breaks if folded around long enough. Things these days are becoming more breakable than ever before so that more people will replace their things quicker. For phones that have fans inside, know that they are not water proof or even resistant, if they were then the laptops would have adapted that technology long ago.

Just maybe we are going through a stage of R&D where it will take a while for a better product to come into the market, like Iron Man’s JARVIS, but until then how much do you think we should spend on phones that are not exactly giving us anything new. For those who are not tech savvy read the blog about how much you should really spend on smartphones in a world where good phones are not getting cheaper but cheap phones are getting better.
